On behalf of Lisa:
Do over-the-counter vitamins or supplements help reduce the appearance of pimples and blackheads. If so, which are the best ones to buy?

Dear Lisa,
Many thanks for taking the time to post a question. There is very little robust scientific evidence that supplements or over the counter vitamins will treat blackheads and spots. Small amounts of data suggest that zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, nicotinamide (vitamin B3) and vitamin A supplements could have a beneficial role but the science is weak. I certainly would not recommend these as a first-line option for a growing teenager as supplements do not come without risk.
I would suggest that first skincare needs to be optimised and your teen should look for cleansers and other skincare products which contain the following:
salicyclic acid
glycolic acid
nicotinamide
retinol
tea tree oil
If after a few weeks of use of these ingredients, the spots persist then i would suggest review by your family doctor as he or she may need prescription creams or even tablets.
I hope that helps and best wishes,
Anjali
