Itchy red feet with long term toenail fungus
Hi, I have a real problem with my feet! It has been getting worse for years. I have had toenail fungus on one foot for four years. It started when I had my toenails done for a wedding. I cannot take pills for it due to a liver problem. I have tried all sorts of paint-on remedies, soak the foot twice a day and change my socks twice a day. Lately the whole foot looks red and is itchy. I can see spots on the top of the foot. Any ideas? Thanks

Dear Mrs Walker,
I am so sorry to hear about your skin and nail problem. Toenail fungal infection can be very difficult to treat if you are not able to take medicine by mouth because e.g. liver problems like in your case. Topical treatments can work but not always, and oral treatments are usually much more effective. As for your question about itchy red foot - this could be fungal infection spreading to your foot from toenails. In such case it usually responds really well to an antifungal cream such as terbinafine cream or ketoconazole cream. But this could be an unrelated problem such as dermatitis/eczema. The latter would be treated with emollients and a strong steroid cream/ointment. You may want to see your GP or dermatologist to discuss this. If you would like to read more about dermatitis and available treatments there is more information on this topic available on my website, if it is of interest to you, http://alexandroff.org.uk/Patients.html
I hope this is helpful.
