cellulitis and eczema

Postby tdh101095 on Tue Mar 05, 2019 6:53 pm

My 3 month old son was recently diagnosed with eczema. When we adjusted to the diagnosis and started moisturizing daily, he developed cellulitis in his eye. He eye was swollen completely shut and we had to go to the ER. There they gave him a steriod shot and a shot packed with antibiotics. Everything went away for a few days and now his eczema is back with a vengence. Cortisone is not doing the trick anymore. Has anyone else had problems with cellulitis and eczema? Any advice....

Sorry to hear that, not much experience with eyelid eczema as my daughter only had it twice or so...
Had interviewed a dermatologist who did mention cellulitis as one of the eczema eyelid complications

This refers to bacterial infection of the eyelid and can also be caused by insect bite/ other skin injury. Preseptal cellulitis affects the eyelid and skin around the eye, but not the eye socket. Orbital Cellulitis is much more severe and affects the back of the eye, causing eye protrusion and double vision. The common bacteria causing cellulitis are Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus.

One of the things that I can think of is keeping staph bacteria low.. since cellulitis is likely to be staph bacteria infection, it may mean that child's eczema skin is prone to staph bacteria colonization. We wash alternate day with octenisan, an anti-microbial wash. You can probably choose any anti-microbial wash at the pharmacy, but not daily use and moisturize right after as some anti-microbial cleanser may be drying.

Take care, hugs.
