Trial on:

Would you be interested in a new treatment for Alopecia Areata (patchy hair loss) that could help you and others?

Trial ends: 28 October 2022

The pharmaceutical company Soterios have asked talkhealth to help find and recruit members who have mild-to-moderate Alopecia Areata (patchy hair loss NOT totalis or universalis) to take part in a clinical trial which aims test a new topical treatment for Alopecia Areata and assess its effectiveness in inducing hair regrowth.

If you are unsure about what Alopecia Areata is or how it presents itself, please read our article all about the condition to receive more information and guidance: Click here to read the article

The trial aims to test a new topical treatment, which has been used for many years as a treatment for psoriasis and research suggests it may also be an effective treatment for Alopecia Areata, and can be applied as a cream to the skin. If the trial is successful, Soterios intends to gain approval for the treatment to be prescribed to patients with mild/moderate Alopecia Areata.

Who can take part?

Anyone:

  • Age 18 or over.
  • With a current episode of patchy hair loss / Alopecia Areata lasting more than 6 months
  • Able to read and write in English
  • Be generally in good health and not planning to become pregnant
  • Not be using any other alopecia treatments for at least 6 weeks (or 3 months depending on medication)

What will it involve?

Following a preliminary screening to confirm suitability to participate, trialists will be asked to give consent to receive either the new topical treatment/cream, or a placebo form of the treatment/cream. They will not know which type of cream they have, so as not to influence the results.

They will then be asked to apply the cream to the affected skin every day for 6 months.

Study participants will be required to attend a nearby clinic in the UK every 2 months throughout the trial period in order for hair regrowth to be measured and therefore the effectiveness of the treatment to be assessed. These visits will be scheduled at the following points:

  • Visit 1: preliminary screening
  • Visit 2: enrolment/baseline assessments (visit 1 & 2 may occur on the same day)
  • Visit 3: month 2
  • Visit 4: month 4
  • Visit 5: month 6
  • Visit 6: month 8 – follow up evaluation

*Participants will receive a reimbursement of up to £50 per visit (with receipts) to cover expenses*

Trialists will be assessed at these visits by a healthcare professional and asked to complete a questionnaire about the treatment and their quality of life.

*Trial recruitment ends December 2022*
