Re: I feel shunned

Dear Fozzeduk, I'm sorry to hear of your experience, and as already suggested you should ask your consultant for advice. Sometimes consultants have a good idea of which local practices are more likely to be sympathetic in this situation/have a GP with an interest in epilepsy and/or associated mood o...

Re: curing epilepsy

Dear Diane, It depends what you mean by cure. Some people would argue that if seizures are completely controlled by medication, without side effects, even though the individual stays on the medication, they think of themselves as "cured" in that the epilepsy doesn't interefer with their da...

Re: Why are these called focal seizures?

Dear Samantha, you really need to ask your neurologist to get a definite answer with respect to your individual case, as he/she is the person who will have access to your investigation results (brain imaging, EEG), and your full medical history. You should also tell him/her about your other symptoms...

Re: Epanutin

Dear TreeRoots, Epaneutin (Phenytoin) has been associated with damage to the ends of the long nerves causing sensory changes in the feet (peripheral neuropathy), but the same symptoms can be due to lots of other causes, so if you haven't already you should see your doctor to get this checked out. Th...

Re: Withdrawing Medication/Pregnancy

Dear Michelle, I'm very pleased to hear that you clearly had a good result from surgery for what sounds like previously difficult epilepsy. Making a decision about if and when to try withdrawing from antiepileptic medication is a very personal one, and there is no right or wrong answer. Although in ...

Re: Diagnosed as Child

Hi Pookalooza, I'd just typed a reply to this but now know that if I submit at the same time as someone else is replying, it doesn't get saved! Must remember to save before submitting in the future...... Anyway - as Kathy says - the bottom line is if you are worried you should speak to your GP, who ...

Re: Advise

Dear Elaine, as has already been said - you'll be asked about the symptoms/suspected seizures - including the circumstances, if there are any warning symptoms (they'll ask you son this also), what happens during the episodes, if there are any triggers, how he is afterwards, frequency etc. We usually...

Re: Sudden death in epilepsy

Hi Foxcroft, Good question - as you've seen there is clear guidance on this, and it is something that should be discussed. The trickier question is how and when - and this can be hard to judge. My own practice is to mention it at the time of making the diagnosis, or whenever I first see a patient. T...
