The patches are usually tan, patchy brown and skin discoloration is usually annoying and embarrassing. It is usually common in women in the reproductive years and the major areas that are affected include:
• Upper cheeks
• Upper lips
• Forehead

It is quite uncommon in males and usually considered disease of females and it is closely linked to hormonal changes in them. The main hormones that play a role in Melasma are estrogen and progesterone and are quite common in pregnant women and those who are taking birth control pills.
