Total void due to coughing.
I have become incontinent due to coughing as a result of my COPD. I have been to a clinic, been assessed and started pelvic floor exercises but also informed that it could be a lifetime situation as the cough will always be with me. I have had pads and net pants which were not a lot of use but were cheaper than other products. I have been told that a sheath catheter may be my best course of action. This causes me some concern as I am happily married and this will interfere with our normal relationship. Also, the inference seems to be you have a pad and catheter, so use it. I have normal bladder control, I just need a safe guard. The reason the pads are of no use is that on a trip to town, someone with cheap perfume or aftershave will start my cough off and so I will need a change before i get off the bus. Gents toilets generally don't have sanitary bins or in most cases, rubbish bins. The pads become too heavy for the nets to support. Becuase of the COPD, I have to aim to consume 3 litres of liquid a day and so the problem is not a light one.

Chronic coughing and associated stress urinary incontinence is a common problem in anyone who has a long term respiratory problem. A technique called 'The Knack' can be very useful; basically you tighten your pelvic floor muscles as you cough. This technique takes considerable practice but does work and generally sufferers report that they only leak a few drops with very strong coughing. It's success will be improved by daily pelvic floor exercises. A specialist continence physiotherapist would be able to help you. Professor Grace Dorey has written a number of publications that may be of interest to you:

The reason a sheath catheter would have been suggested is because it fixes onto your penis like a condom but can be removed easily . So normal relations can be maintained. having a napy sack or something like this can also help when having to dispose of pads. I agree with talking to a continence advisor who will expand on the options.
