Hi Karen
The liver metabolises hormones and other substances using two primary phases known and Phase 1 and Phase 2.
The Phase 1 pathway is the main metabolic pathway for the oestrogen hormones. In premenstrual women, the ovaries produce oestrogen, primarily, oestradiol, most of which the body converts into oestrone, and eventually oestriol. The liver then metabolises the remaining oestradiol and the converted oestrone, breaking it down further, and excreting the excess from the body. So your liver now has more work to do, along with the regular job of expelling the toxins from your body, some of which will be breaking down alcohol, during menopause the function does slow a little, very unfair side effect! There could be a part to play with your nightly drinking, and the ‘apple’ shape it is not at all uncommon. B vitamins will help, and perhaps a couple of days a week without the regular alcohol intake will improve your liver function.
