We try to remain as fit and healthy as possible for a variety of reasons. It could be that we want to be around as long as possible to watch our loved ones grow and craft their own lives. It may be because we want to remain in good shape as we grow old ourselves. We keep healthy via regular exercise and trying to eat healthy foods. However, some of those foods we consider to be healthy can also be damaging to our teeth.

 

Of course, we’re not trying to put you off eating healthy foods. We’re merely suggesting that you consider oral hygiene and take great care of your teeth to avoid a dreaded trip to the dentist. With this is mind, here’s a guide to help you avoid damaging foods.

 

Healthy Food That Can Be Damaging For Your Teeth

 

There are an abundance of different foods that can provide great benefits to your body, but at the same time, can cause tooth decay on top of a variety of other oral hygiene drawbacks if you don’t take care of your teeth properly.

 

  • Citrus fruitsMost people are aware that fruit contains many essential vitamins and nutrients that our bodies need. However, citrus fruits such as oranges and clementine can contribute to tooth decay.
  • Coffee and tea – In their natural forms, coffee and tea do carry some benefits to your health. However, if you want to avoid them damaging your teeth, try to refrain from adding too much sugar which contributes hugely to tooth decay and dental problems.
  • Dried fruits – Though all fruit contains benefits to your health, dried fruits have a tendency to stick to your teeth which can allow bacteria to develop and lead to oral hygiene problems. If you eat a lot of dried fruit, make sure your brush and floss regularly.
  • Potatoes – Potatoes are a staple food for many people in the world and they’re a great source of carbohydrates which the body needs. However, they’re also rich in starch, which sticks to teeth easily and can cause tooth decay.
  • Energy drinks – People think of energy drinks as healthy because they enhance your ability to exercise for more prolonged lengths of time. However, they’re largely sugar-based, so expect dental problems down the line if you drink them regularly without brushing your teeth thoroughly after.

 

We all want to a smile we can be proud of and for most of us that means keeping our teeth white and healthy. Again, we’re not trying to suggest you quit eating the food that carries great health benefits for your body, we’re simply urging you to take great care of your teeth in the process. We all want to be healthy, and ideally, we’d like to hang on to our natural teeth for as long as possible.
