September has kicked off with a variety of interesting stories from the world of health. Here we feature a few which you might find helpful.
What’s your heart age?
You may have already read or heard that the NHS and Public Health England are urging the public to take an online test to assess the healthiness of their hearts. Many publications and radio stations, including the Telegraph, conveyed the message.
To complete the Heart Age Test, you’ll need to answer a series of questions about your lifestyle and physical health. The tool will then tell you how old your heart is estimated to be – which can be quite a surprise for some people. If the result indicates that you have a heart older than your actual age then you’ll be given advice on how to reduce your risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
You can find the heart test on NHS Choices.
The benefits of hormone therapy treatment
The Times newspaper published an in-depth article titled ‘Hormone therapy: why everything you thought you knew about HRT is wrong’. It busts a few myths about the risks of breast cancer, and states that “hormone replacement therapy (HRT) – oestrogen plus progesterone – is the only medicine clinically shown to reduce the risk of dementia, by 45 to 60 per cent.”
It praises the use of oestrogen, which it says “also lowers the risk of heart disease by 50 per cent” and “protects by increasing the internal flexibility of bone.”

Scorching hot summer doubled demand for NHS heatwave advice
The BBC reported that, between June and August this year, the NHS UK website received 1.5 million visits to its heat-related advice pages – that’s twice as many than in 2017. Thankfully it’s cooled down now we’re in September. However, if you’re planning to travel anywhere that’s hot, you might like to take a look at the BBC’s tips for staying cool in heatwave conditions.

Have a wonderful weekend!
Lots to read and think about in September, for some I bet you’re glad the heat has gone, for others who may be going on holiday still, the heatwave tips will still be relevant. I will be taking the heart age test, post your results here.
on September 10, 2018 at 2:37 pm talkhealthWell my heart age is 43 (I’m actually 41) and I can expect to live until I’m 81, I’m happy with that, my Nan is still alive and kicking at 96 so maybe longevity runs in our family.
